Genshin Impact Won't Launch, Crashing, Black Screen Fix

Having trouble launching Genshin Impact on your PC? Does the launcher fail to show up when you attempt to run the game, or does the game refuse to start even when you hit the Launch button on the launcher? You're certainly not the only one facing this issue.

Quite a few Genshin Impact players have reported problems when initiating the game. A myriad of factors could be causing this launch failure.

Take a look at the comprehensive guide below, where we've outlined a series of steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue of Genshin Impact not launching. Here's your pathway to restoring your gaming experience.

Genshin Impact won't launch

Method #1

Some players encounter the error "0xc000007b" or "MSVCP140.dll was not found" when running Genshin Impact. You might face these issues if the Microsoft Visual C++ redistributable packages are not installed properly. To fix it, follow the steps below:

First of all, you should install the Visual C++ Redistributable Packages for Visual Studio 2013.

Secondly, you should install the Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio 2015.

Method #2

If your Genshin Impact account won't launch, keeps crashing or you get a black screen in the game, the issue may be related to your drivers. It's important to keep your graphics drivers up-to-date. So let's check for the latest drivers:

Nvidia GPU drivers: https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforce/drivers/
AMD GPU drivers: https://www.amd.com/en/support
Intel: https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/80939/Graphics

Note: I suggest you to uninstall your driver using DDU before installing the new driver. Here is the DDU guide.

By the way, you should also update your Windows OS.

Method #3

You should try to run the game as an administrator.

  • Right-click on Genshin Impact on your desktop.
  • Click "Run as administrator"
Genshin Impact Run as administrator

Method #4

If you are using a VPN on your system, you must disable it. VPN may cause you not being able to log into Genshin Impact.

Method #5

If you are a laptop user, your laptop may be using the integrated graphics card (intel) instead of dedicated GPU.

You can run the game with your dedicated graphics card by following these steps:

  • Right-click the Genshin Impact shortcut on the desktop.
  • Go to "Run with graphics processor" option
  • Select the High-performance processor

In Windows 10, you can also follow these steps:

  • Enter graphics settings into Windows search box, then select Open once the results populate.
  • Click the Browse button under “Graphics performance preference” in the window that appears.
  • Select the GenshinImpact.exe
    Default Location: C:\Program Files\Genshin Impact\Genshin Impact Game
  • Then click Add
Genshin Impact Windows 10 graphics settings
  • After that click on the Options button.
  • A new window will popup, select the High performance in the Graphics preference page.
  • Then click Save button.
  • Also, adjust the same things for the launcher.exe application.
Note: The launcher.exe is in the folder where Genshin Impact is installed.
  • Restart your PC.

Method #6

If the game is stuck / freezes on the loading screen , then it stops responding and crashes, follow these steps:

  • Navigate to C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\LocalLow\miHoYo
C:\Users\%UserName%\AppData\LocalLow\miHoYo

Note: if you cannot access the AppData folder, click on the View, select the Hidden items

hidden items
  • Delete the Genshin Impact folder
  • Then press the Windows + R keys simultaneously on your keyboard.
  • Type regedit
  • Press the Enter key.
  • The Registry Editor will open. In the left panel, Navigate to Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\
  • Right-click on the miHoYo and then delete it.
  • After that right-click on the miHoYoSDK and delete it.
Genshin Impact Registry
  • Exit the Registry Editor
  • You can run the game now.

Method #7

If, after launching Genshin Impact, the game gets stuck on a black or white screen, DirectX may be the cause of the problem.

  • Right-click the Genshin Impact shortcut
  • Select Properties
  • On the Shortcut tab, click on "Open File Location" button.
  • Open the DXSETUP folder
  • Run the DXSETUP.exe and install it.

Method #8

Add the location of the Genshin Impact's installation folder to the whitelist in your antivirus software or temporarily disable the antivirus protection. Then try to run the game.

Method #9

If you are a laptop user, try reinstalling Genshin Impact after disabling your integrated graphics card.

  • Uninstall the game.
  • Then go to the Device Manager. In the Windows search box on the taskbar, type device manager, then open it from the menu.
  • Double click "Display adapters" in your device manager
  • Right-click on your integrated graphics (Intel HD Graphics) under the Display adapters
  • Select "Disable device"
  • Now run the GenshinImpact_install and install the game.
  • Launch the game when the installation is complete.
  • You can now go to the device manager and re-enable Intel HD graphics.

Method #10

Also check out this forum post that addresses the launch issue, maybe that solution will work for you.

If your issue still persists, your PC may not meet the minimum requirements for playing Genshin Impact.

  • Whenever I click launch My laptop turns off then turns back on and brings me back to the launcher button and I followed the steps to fix it

  • Im so thankful for this post!!! Yesterday I got curious about crowd density and my game's graphics, then I made the worst decision ever, changing my graphics from low to high without even thinking, my game immediately crashed and i had to turn off my laptop to get out of it. After that, the launcher would open but right after changing to the loading screen it would freeze, and even though this happened just yesterday, i got extremely sad today because I was really far into the game, thankfully, method 6 worked! And I even got Jean today too, I couldnt be happier!

    • I did the same exact thing but when I click the methon number 6 it says that i can't open the file and that it could be moved or deleted

  • i need help. genshin used to run normally (a bit laggy, but nothing much) until a month ago, i even got albedo. suddenly the game stopped responding. i had this problem where you click the launcher button but it doesn't launch. i, then, chose to reinstall the game.
since then i cannot login because, despite it launches, it's tremendously laggy already on the login screen. it's so laggy i can't even type my e-mail and password. i tried to, when i first faced the problem, to wait until the game logged normally so i could lower the graphic settings... and i was surprised to find that, after circa 1 hour of waiting for it to load, it was running at minimum.
the game became unplayable, litterally. i don't know what it could possibly be, since it happened suddenly. i do have a low spec laptop, but i'm not aware of any incompatibilities. i've seen people with lower spec machines running the game normally, with even more FPS than me when i used to play it.
i would be glad if someone could help me on that or just to know if any of you have had the same or a similar issue.

    • i couldnt even click on genshin impact and on the start it was just blank all my other apps were there but not genshin impact i tried running as administrator the let app make changes to your device thing came out but when i clicked yes it didnt open i did this for 50+ times and it still wouldnt open i tried re downloading it didnt open too i tried other methods but all of them didnt work i really need help this is a new computer im certain it isnt becuase the system is broken

  • when i click on the launcher, it says do you want this app to make changes to your device as i always do but when i click yes, nothing happens

  • My problem is this: when i run the launcher the game shows me:
Failed to check for updates, but when i click on the reconnect button it pops up the same message. I think it bugs out and i cant run the game.

  • My game has no problem downloading, but when I press launch, is doesn't do anything. I have tried to press "Run as Administrator" to try to get the "Do you want this app to change your device" but nothing. I have tried reinstalling multiple times but still nothing.. It works just fine on my laptop, but not on my desktop. I really want to play on my desktop. I do not have faceit ac.

  • hey, when i launch GI from launcher the game wont launch, and when i open resource monitor (resmon.exe) the game got terminated after i launch GI from launcher

  • are there any suggestions for what to do if I can open the game for a few seconds before it freezes the screen and crashes? by any chance would that suggest at any of the solutions working?

  • I could play the game fine just for a few days and now it doesn't launch anymore when i press Launch from the launcher ...

And i really wanna play it badly

  • Has anyone figured out any additional fixes aside from the ones listed here? I'm running off of a desktop with more than enough space and power to play the game, but I keep getting frozen on the white loading screen with the elemental symbols until the game says the server stopped responding and timed out.
Not sure what else can be done right now with the game being as new as it is.

  • I keep doing method #3, but nothing happens, the game tries to launch but then it just closes and nothing pops up and I have to do the same things over and over again

    • This is the exact same issue I am running into as well.
Like it just disappears... I've tried waiting it out before to see if it was just taking forever to actually launch but the system truly thinks it's done its job (at least according to task manager)

  • My game had no problem downloading but when I click to launch it closes the original window and it starts to load but then just closes. it makes a text document called Errno 2 any clue how to fix this?

  • when i run the game all i see is the games curser a black screen and i hear the music but after just sitting there for a bit the music glitches and every things frozen even the entire pc

  • I've done all the steps and my only problem is I have only 20.7 GB of available space on my disk, but I downloaded the game and i can launch it its just it runs as far as the credits for the warning and then plays the music but ends up crashing any fix here ?(i also tried clearing my disk of space but it didn't remove much 20.8 GB 🙁 )

    • uninstall some programs look at your hard disk space if you have more then 20gb of total disk space then uninstall programs to increase your 20gb you might have some programs that eat most of your total space

  • I keep getting this message “Genshin Impact is running. Click to close the game and continue installation.”

When I hit confirm it just keeps popping up.

  • When I press launch it it would try to launch but it closes up after wards but I look at my task manager it says its running IDK why

  • For me i click run as admin but when i click yes it still has the option to run as admin. when i try to luanch it the same thing happends

    • Hi Bob, the same problem here. My son has User-Rights. I installed the program and it won't be able to play in user-context. Writing a program that only want to run with administrative privileges is not very serious ! It will open up your system for viruses, backdoors and all the "good" stuff. You better should not trust this !

  • So i disabled my intel graphics but and run the game and it worked! And the problem now is whenever i re-enable it, it starts crashing again.

    • Same, it just won't work unless I leave the intel graphics disabled. It's super laggy and glitchy, when I turn the graphics back on it crashes.

        • GTX1050Ti.
The game works only when I disable integrated graphics, and it still works when I enable it back because it is still using Nvidia GPU. So the problem is that Genshin cannot run on Integrated graphics. I tried method #9 but it only works once, after you close the game and open it again it's not working anymore. I've tried through Nvidia control panel and Window settings to make Genshin run on Nvidia GPU but it still doesn't work. I still have to manually disable Integrated Graphics everytime I try to play the game and it's driving me crazy!

  • If the launcher does NOTHING when launching the game. Meaning you click it after installing the launcher, and nothing happens at all. Go to your device manager, under display adapters DISABLE your graphics card (DO NOT UNINSTALL OR DELETE, JUST DISABLE). Then run the launcher and download/install the game. After that, you can re-enable.

  • Using boot camp here. The following worked.

If your launcher is like mine and not popping up at all:

    1) go to windows device manager
    2) find display adapters
    3) disable (do NOT delete) them
    4) download install and complete install and launch game
    5) turn display adapters back on.

  • My problem is not listed below. I installed the launcher just fine, but whenever it want to play the game shuts down without any warning or crash report. This always happens right after the epilepsy warning.

  • Nothing's working.

My game loads into the white screen and then drops off into the black with the singing in the background, but nothing else at all.

No menu or anything, just darkness.

  • I tried everything i could to fix it but nothing helped. When i try to launch the game there is the warning and music in the backgrount and then it dies. No error or anything. It just turns of and... nothing.

  • I'll get to the point, after all of these fixes my launcher still won't start. I know that the game creates dump files, I read some of it and I think the problem has to do with 3 dll files not verifying checksum, those being Qt5Core.dll, Qt5Qml.dll, and opengl32sw.dll. I don't know what to do, I've tried replacing the dll files within the game only to be met with some entry point failing, ive tried registering them which doesnt seem to work. Ive put these dll files into my system32 folder and syswow64 folder to no avail. I still don't know what to do, but its only the 3rd day, theres still time for a fix.

    • An application or service running in the background may cause this problem. Try this:

      - Press Windows + R key
      - Type the msconfig
      - Press Enter key
      - Go to the Services tab.
      - Select “Hide all Microsoft services”
      - Click on the “Disable all” button.
      - Press OK
      - Restart the PC.

If it works, it means that a running application is preventing the game from opening.

By the way, you can restore it by clicking the "Enable All" button in the same window.

      • Well, I tried the fix, nothing has changed. I can't think of a way to fix this issue, however I think it has to do with the fact that I'm using Windows 10 Bootcamp. That's probably why, however I don't know because every other game that only runs on windows works fine on this laptop.

        • I have the same problem like you. I also cannot launch the GI Launcher and the dump files keep popping up every time I start the launcher. I have no idea why this is happening. I played the CBT2 of GI normally on my laptop but when this official version released, I can't even download the game. (For anyone who said I need to delete the version before, I did delete everything when the CBT2 ended)

    • Had same problem then did this now it works. In windows go to settings\Update and Security\Windows Security\App and Browser Control\ Scroll down to a section called exploit protection and select Exploit protection settings.

Once in there select program settings and click add a program to customize and choose exact path. Go to the installer exe and select it.

Put a check mark over all override system settings and make sure the option below them are all off. Press apply and give it a try.
