How to fix Valheim not launching, crashing, or opening with a black screen?
All possible solutions to fix these types of issues encountered in Valheim will be shared in this guide.
Method #1
If Valheim won't launch or crashes, this is often caused by corruption in the game files.
You can check if you have any corrupt game files by following these steps:
- Go to Library page on Steam.
- Right-click on Valheim
- Select Properties
- Go to Local Files tab.
- Click the "Verify integrity of game files..."
Method #2
If you are facing a black screen when starting Valheim after the new patch, you can fix this issue by adding a parameter to the launch options on Steam.
- Go to Library
- Right-click on Valheim and select Properties
- On the General tab, paste the following into the Launch Options box.
-screen-width 1920 -screen-height 1080
-screen-width 1920 -screen-height 1080
- Then run the game and go to the "Misc" tab in settings.
- Adjust the "Scale GUI" to fix tiny UI/menu.
Method #3
If there are mods installed in Valheim, make sure they are up to date or try to run the game after deleting them all.
To disable the mods in Valheim, follow these steps:
- Go to the installation directory (Steam > Library > Valheim > Manage > Browse local files)
- Delete or rename the "doorstop_config.ini" file.
- Or, rename the folder "BepInEx" to "BepInEx Test"
- After that, try to launch Valheim.
Note: Mods will come back if you change the "BepInEx Test" folder to its old name. You can use this method at least until the mods are updated. Also, to completely delete all mods, you can delete all folders except "MonoBleedingEdge" and "Valheim_Data".
If you want to temporarily play an older version of Valheim to get rid of the issues, check out this guide on Reddit.
Additionally, make sure your GPU drivers are up to date, and Visual C++ Redistributables are installed. You should also disable Steam overlay and run the game as an administrator. For more info, check out this guide.
